Rays 6 White Sox 2: The Price Was Right

I don't want any crap for that headline. It's the end of the season. It's been a terrible September. I'm not in any mood to actually think of something creative.

Cheap and easy, baby. Cheap and easy.

Paul Konerko Will Need Hand Surgery This Winter

While he says it hasn't had any impact on his ability to hit this year, Paul Konerko did admit before Sunday's home finale that he'll need surgery on his hand this offseason. The surgery will be to remove a floating bone fragment in his left hand that has moved between Konerko's hand and wrist.

While the Sox haven't actually been eliminated, they not only need to win their last four games of the season, but they'll also need a lot of help from the Twins and Royals. Help they're not likely to get.

However, don't give up just yet. Watch today's game because it could be the last home game in a White Sox uniform for a lot of your old favorites.

Happy Birthday To Us

If I can take time out of my normal White Sox schedule here, it's time I wished myself, or more accurately, South Side Asylum a happy birthday.

My birthday isn't for another four days, so there's still time to get me a gift.

South Side Asylum, however, was born a year ago today. Right after the 2011 season and Don Cooper's managerial career came to an end.

It's been a very fun year* and I've had a blast writing the blog and interacting with all of you on Twitter. I can only hope that the second year is as enjoyable as this first one was.*

Thanks for reading. Don't ever stop. Seriously my site tracker tells me where all of you live. I'll come after you.

White Sox 3 Rays 1: Reports Of White Sox Demise May Have Been Exaggerated

Considering how insane life has been around here I feel the need to caution everybody against getting too excited. Yes it was nice to win a baseball game. It was twice as nice to do so on the same night that the Tigers lost. And one game back with five to go has a lot better ring to it than two back with six left, but that's just it.

The Sox are still in second place, one game back with only five to go. The margin for error is nonexistent.

Is Steve Stone Planning On A Departure?

Steve Stone was on the Boers and Bernstein Show doing his weekly segment today and at the end of his segment he was asked about his future with the White Sox. Which is when things got a little strange.

I'm Taking This Too Personally

I like to think that if you've learned anything about me when it comes to my writing, be it here, CBSSports, or anywhere I've written in the past, it's that I don't take sports all that seriously.

Rays 3 White Sox 2: What's The Point?

The White Sox had the bases loaded with nobody out in consecutive innings tonight. They scored 2 runs: one on a hit by pitch and the other on a 6-4-3 double play.

What the hell else do I even have to say?

The last time we saw the Rays was the end of May when we were sweeping a three-game series in Tampa. Doing that again right now would be fantastic, so let's do that.

Wouldn't the most 2012 White Sox move of all time be losing a series to Cleveland only to sweep the Rays right after?

Indians 4 White Sox 3: Solo Shot Offense Just Not Enough

Hawk spent the majority of the day blaming Gordon Beckham for the Sox not being able to turn a double play in the fourth inning that would allow three runs to score and increase Cleveland's lead to 4-0.

Never mind that it was a difficult play to make, or that you can never assume the double play, Hawk said the Sox gave the Indians "gift runs." Which is total crap.

Week 24 Pitchers Poll: Gavin Floyd Makes His Case

The competition for the third starter spot should the White Sox make the playoffs hasn't really been much of a competition, unfortunately. Right now the leader for the spot is Gavin Floyd and he's miles ahead of both Francisco Liriano and Jose Quintana.

And while I'm not exactly upset to see Gavin pitching well. While his ERA this month is a typical Gavin 4.58, in his three starts since returning from the disabled list he's walked 3 batters in 17.2 innings while striking out 18.

Week 24 Hitters Poll: Just As Ugly As You Thought It Was

The best thing there is to say about last week is that it's over. The Sox went 1-5 on their road trip, and the numbers here will show you whose fault it was just in case you weren't already sure.

Of course, if you weren't already sure, you're either blind and can't read this anyway, or you don't watch the White Sox and wound up here through some weird search engine malfunction.

The Most Important Home Run Of The Season*

*So far

White Sox 5 Indians 4: Adam Dunn Saves Everybody

Oh Adam Dunn, you big beautiful bastard. You hadn't done a damn thing all month. While you were actually hitting .244 -- which is like anybody else hitting .315 -- you'd only hit 1 homer and driven in 2 runs.

Then tonight came. Tonight came and you may have saved the season.

Out!

The last time the White Sox saw Cleveland they beat the Indians 12-6 to move within a half-game of the division lead....behind the Cleveland Indians.  Things have changed quite a bit since then, haven't they?

The Indians have actually gone 37-69 since that day.

Hopefully one thing that won't change is our success against Cleveland this year. The Sox need a win tonight and they need one bad.

Angels 4 White Sox 1: This Sure Is Fun

I'd say the White Sox were crapping their pants but that's just not the case. No, the Sox are constipated on account of the stress.

The White Sox went 12-24 against the Tigers and Royals this season, but they're 69-44 against everybody else. Well, tonight begins the part of the schedule where we'll only be playing everybody else.

We're 3-2 against the Angels this season and I'd be more than happy to make that 5-3 come Monday.

Rick Hahn Will Have A Job To Do

When the news broke yesterday that Kenny Williams was going to become team president with Rick Hahn assuming general manager duties I said it caught me off guard. It did. Not because it was unexpected -- it was hinted at last winter -- but because I wasn't expecting to hear about it again until the offseason.

As were the White Sox based on the team's refusal to comment on it.

Report: Kenny Williams To Become White Sox President, Rick Hahn Promoted To General Manager

For what it's worth, while he didn't deny it, Kenny Williams wouldn't confirm the news.

"No one's 2013 status, not even mine, will be discussed while we are singularly focused on winning a Championship and more immediately, tonight's game," said Williams in an email to the Chicago Tribune.

I'd like to let this become official before really diving into it, plus I need more time to digest it, but this is a pretty big shakeup in the Sox front office if true. Not all together unexpected, but still, it's caught me off guard.

Heyman: Sox Won't Pick Up Peavy's Option

It's hard to deny that 2012 has been Jake Peavy's best season in a White Sox uniform. The fact that it's been the only year he's been able to remain healthy is enough reason to make that claim, but Jake's pitched pretty well too.

Is Gordon Beckham For Real This Time?

Ever since the end of Gordon Beckham's rookie season with the White Sox he's been a maddeningly inconsistent player. He rose through the team's farm system very quickly -- a trend around these parts -- was thrown right into the fire and responded well.

White Sox 3 Royals 2: Well There's One

Ordinarily I'd probably be perturbed about the fact the Sox relied on three solo homers to score all their runs on Tuesday night, but this game was against the Royals.

I don't care how the Sox go about beating the Royals, just as long as they do just that: beat the Royals.

Quite Possibly My Favorite Tweet Of All Time

Advice For The White Sox

Advice for all of us really.

Week 23 Pitchers Poll: This Is Why You Should Use Matt Thornton

Last week I wasn't shy about expressing my opinions on the way Robin Ventura was handling his bullpen in our two losses to the Tigers. This is because Ventura was acting like an idiot and bringing in pitchers who had no right to be in the situations he put them in, particularly with Matt Thornton just sitting in the bullpen with nothing else to do.

Robin said he was doing this because Thornton needed a rest. Apparently nobody needs a rest against Minnesota, though, as Matty came in for key situations there as well as in Monday's win.

Week 23 Hitters Poll: A Total Team Effort

The improvement that we started to see from the offense two weeks ago continued last week at the most important time. Not surprisingly, the White Sox went 4-2 since our last set of rankings thanks to strong performances throughout the lineup.

Really, aside from only two players in the lineup, everybody had an acceptable week, and plenty had fantastic weeks.

Ah, the last most important game of the season. At least until the next one, anyway.

How important is this one? Well, if the Sox win they'll be 3 games up on Detroit with 16 games left to play. Which means even if the Sox were only able to go 8-8 over those final 16 games Detroit would have to go 12-4 to take sole possession of first place.

If the Sox lose, well, there's always this post which was meant for Thursday's game.
