The Diamondbacks Want Steve Stone
Steve Stone returned to The Score this morning to talk to Dan McNeil and Matt Spiegel, and while he didn't come out and say he'd be returning, he sounded a lot more concrete about his plans than he did last time he hit the radio airwaves.
When asked off the bat whether he was going to be back in the White Sox television booth next season Stone said "I would think so" but, as was the case last week, he put a lot of qualifiers on it.
And it seems now we know why Stone isn't backing himself into any corners. The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Monday that they wouldn't be bringing back either Daron Sutton or Mark Grace, which doesn't come as much of a surprise seeing as how Sutton hasn't called an Arizona game since June and Grace has been off the air since a DUI in August.
As for potential replacements, Mark Gonzalez reports that Stone is on a "very short list of candidates."
And if Stone truly is worn down by working with Hawk Harrelson -- he certainly wouldn't be the first -- then the Arizona gig makes a lot of sense for him. First of all, he lives in Arizona, and this would allow him to be close to the lovely Lisa Stone for most of the year. Second of all, Hawk wouldn't be following him there.
So I wouldn't be shocked at all if it's announced in the near future that Stone Pony is joining the Diamondbacks television booth. Of course, he is still under contract with the White Sox, but that doesn't mean a deal can't be worked out.
Stone to Arizona for Justin Upton and Dan Hudson seems plenty fair to me. He is a Cy Young winner after all.
