If We Can Take A Break From The White Sox To Shed A Tear For The Sun-Times
That's a story currently on the Sun-Times site under sports at the moment and holy shit do I find it depressing.
The Chicago Sun-Times is the newspaper I grew up reading. Every day my dad would bring home a copy of the paper from work, and I would begin the process of reading through the sports section. Reading recaps of games I couldn't watch the night before or glancing over box scores of other games.
I'd read the columns and learn fron an early age how to get upset at stupid things said by other people who obviously had no clue what they were talking about. Sometimes I'd even agree with the column.
The truth is that without the Sun-Times, I probably wouldn't be doing this today. I'd have some job I didn't actually enjoy just because that's what you're supposed to do.
Instead I'm writing about sports for a living, just like those I read in the Chicago Sun-Times.
Now I see stories about Kristin Cavallari and Nick Lachey and fucking baby names in the sports section and I can't help but be depressed. I don't blame the Sun-Times for the direction it's going in because frankly you have to dumb things down to get enough attention to pay the bills, but that doesn't make it any less of a god damned shame.
