Kevin Youkilis has been great for the White Sox ever since Kenny Williams broke a child's heart and sent Brent Lillibridge and Zach Stewart to the Red Sox for him.
Since joining the Sox Youkilis has a line of .256/.377/.488 with 8 home runs and 25 RBI, including 2 home runs on Saturday night. However, just because he's been a huge improvement over the third basemen the Sox had been sending out every day before, that doesn't mean he'll be back next season.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Sox don't plan on picking up the $13 million option on Youkilis' contract for 2013.
They like Youkilis but probably not enough to pick up a $13 million option on his contract. At least that’s the thinking now, according to one White Sox official. Youkilis entered Saturday hitting .246 with six homers and 22 RBIs since being acquired. Since the White Sox didn’t give up much and aren’t assuming much of his 2012 salary, they’re content with the rental. Now, obviously, things can change. They tend to do that around these part.
Let's not forget that over the winter this team was supposed to be rebuilding. Instead it's August and the Sox are in first place and Kenny spent his time before the trade deadline acquiring veterans to make the team better.
Whether or not the Sox should bring Youkilis back for 2013, I don't know. These are things best contemplated after the season. I don't even know what to expect for these final two months as the Sox try to hold on to the division lead and get to the playoffs, I'm not in any mood to start figuring out 2013 yet.
