Indians 8 White Sox 6: Phil Humber Continues To Be Less Than Perfect

Ever since throwing his perfect game, Phil Humber has made three starts. In those three starts he's lasted 13.1 innings, allowing 20 earned runs on 21 hits and 11 walks.

That's an ERA of 13.50 and a WHIP of 2.40, which, if I'm correct (flips through book of baseball) is not good.

On Monday in the first game of a doubleheader, Humber lasted only 2.1 innings and gave up 8 runs before finally being relieved of his duties.

Here are some video highlights.

You see, in this clip, the rakes represent Cleveland's bats, and Sideshow Bob's face represents every pitch Humber was just leaving belt-high over the middle of the plate.

I don't know if it's the hoopla from throwing the perfect game, or just the fact that Humber has recently become a father, but he's not pitching anything like the guy we saw against Seattle or last season.

Which is a problem on its own, but a problem that is only magnified now that Chris Sale is no longer in the rotation. Because Humber is no longer this team's fifth starter, he's the fourth.

If there was any good news today it's that Jose Quintana came straight from Birmingham and delivered 5.2 wonderful innings, allowing only 1 hit. I'm sure he's only up for today's game and will be back on his way to Birmingham shortly, but to be honest, his performance may have been good enough to earn him consideration for the fifth spot.

Particularly if Eric Stults bombs in the nightcap. At the very least, however, Quintana is a hero for saving the bullpen in the first game of a doubleheader.

  1. Currently the Sox have alot of bad pitchers. What is there to lose in keeping Quintana up and shuffling some roles to see who fits best where? I'd say Humber fits best in a closet with no lights right now.

(Well, there's nothing to lose other than baseball games and attendance revenue, but they weren't gonna get too much of either of those anyway.)
