White Sox 4 Indians 2: Smooth Sale-ing

I can't believe I went with the Chris Sale pun in his first start. Actually, yes I can.

Chris Sale's first career start went pretty damn well. The only downside was that he had trouble with his command in the first few innings, which caused him to throw a lot of pitches, and as a result he left in the sixth inning having gone over 100 pitches.

Other than that, pretty fantastic line: 6.2 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

If he can give the Sox that in every start we'll be just fine.

This was a game that was pretty comfortable right from the start, as Alejandro De Aza led the game off with a home run [VIDEO]. The first lead-off home run by the Sox since Scott Podsednik on October 2nd, 2009.

Also known as "What happens when Juan Pierre is your lead-off hitter for two seasons."

A.J. Pierzynski followed De Aza's home run with one of his own [VIDEO] later in the inning, a two-run shot that spotted Chris Sale a 3-0 lead right off the bat.

Now, it wasn't a great night on offense, as the Sox could only scratch one more run over the final eight innings and once again went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Strangely enough, that one hit came off the bat of Brent Morel, the first Sox hitter not named Paul Konerko to get a hit with a runner in scoring position.

If only the rest of Morel's night had gone so well, as he went 1-for-5 with 3 more strikeouts.

On the positive side, Dayan Viciedo went 2-for-3 with a double and his first walk of the year, as he's looking better than he did in the spring, even if he isn't making a lot of solid contact.

Then there was Hector Santiago, who became the first member of the Sox bullpen to allow a run this season when he gave up a home run to Jose Lopez to start the ninth. Santiago shut Cleveland down after that, though, picking up his second save.

All in all it was the type of night I'll take all season, in which there was never a reason to be worried. But, please, let's start getting some hits with runners on.

  1. Sale is the real deal. 15 wins is very doable.

  2. The nautical puns can only go up from here!
