The Latest On Yoenis Cespedes

Yoenis Cespedes is quickly becoming the white whale of the White Sox fan base. From people I've talked to, it's as if signing a Cuban prospect that nobody has ever seen face Major League competition will wipe out an offseason that has included nothing but defections, trades and a terrible new slogan.

Unfortunately, with each passing day, the collective Captain Ahab seems further and further away from its goal.

We've still got a while before Cespedes signs anywhere, but from most reports, when the signing does come, it likely won't be with the White Sox.

Scott Merkin tweeted on Tuesday that Dayan Viciedo has taken the time to try and recruit Cespedes -- along with the seldom talked about Jorge Soler -- to the White Sox.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working, as Kevin Goldstein also tweeted on Tuesday that the Cubs are currently the favorite to land him, followed by the Marlins. After what Goldstein calls a "big gap" the Phillies are in third. Goldstein also said that Detroit is in fourth place in a separate tweet. All of which would mean that the Sox are in fifth place at best right now.

So maybe that means Kenny might want to turn his attention to Soler, who is only 19, but some scouts believe has a higher ceiling than Cespedes.

  1. Thanks for the update. Signing Cespedes sure would make this so far downer of a off season a lot more interesting and maybe get the fans to actually optimistic about this upcoming season. With the Tigers losing Victor Martinez for the whole season who knows how the division is going to play out. Come on Kenny spend the bucks needed to sign him.
