Source: John Danks Has Signed An Extension

Well this certainly goes against everything we've been expecting, doesn't it?

According to a source with knowledge of the situation on Wednesday night, the White Sox have agreed to a contract extension with John Danks.

The source could not confirm that the deal was a five-year extension worth $65 million, which was the number floating around Twitter on Wednesday night (though others are reporting that those numbers are correct).

Still, this deal is quite the surprise considering that the Sox had been shopping Danks since the end of the season because they didn't think they'd be able to sign him long-term.

Oh, and there's that whole rebuilding thing.

I guess that when Kenny said he wants to rebuild, there were still a few key pieces he wanted to keep around, and I guess Danks falls in that combination of young and talented. Obviously, this is good news. After losing Mark Buehrle to the Marlins in free agency, going without Danks and Buehrle next year would have left quite a gaping hole in the rotation.

Though one thing I feel should be pointed out is that just because Danks signed a deal, that doesn't mean he's going to be here next spring. It is possible that upon seeing what the market was for Danks this winter, Kenny came to the realization that he wasn't going to get a return anywhere close to what he wanted with Danks entering the final year of his deal.

Instead he saw guys like Mat Latos get a huge return because Latos is under team control for four more seasons.

So maybe, just maybe, this extension is the precursor to a deal that would send Danks to the Yankees for that Banuelos, Montero type deal Williams had been looking for.

  1. Danks is a good pitcher -- much better than his record indicates. Given all the rebuilding talk, this is a surprise, but he's a good player to have. I'd want him on my team.

  3. I've learned to never be surprised about anything that Kenny does. That guy pull so many things out of leftfield it's not even funny
